Search Console Can Now Show You AI Overviews Data. Here's What It Actually Tells You.

This one’s been landing in a fair few client inboxes so we reckon it’s worth breaking down properly.

From June 2026, Google started rolling new reports into Search Console. For the first time, you can see impression data for your pages showing up inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date.

On paper that’s a proper useful addition but before anyone gets carried away, there’s a fair bit this update doesn’t do, and it’s worth being clear on that so nobody’s basing a strategy on data that isn’t there.

What’s actually in the new reports

The AI performance reports cover three of Google’s own surfaces:

  • AI Overviews, the AI-written summary that sits above the normal blue links
  • AI Mode, Google’s fuller conversational search experience
  • AI Overviews in Discover

You’ll see impressions, filtered the same way you’d filter any other Search Console report. That’s genuinely handy for spotting which pages are getting picked up inside AI answers and which aren’t.

Three things it doesn’t cover, and they matter

No click data yet. Impressions only for now so you can see you’re appearing, but you can’t yet see whether anyone’s clicking through off the back of it.

Nothing outside Google’s own ecosystem. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude, none of it. If your customers are searching there too, and increasingly they are, you’re still flying blind unless you’re using a separate AI visibility tool alongside this.

So what should you actually do with it

Use it as one more data point, not the full picture. Check the report to see which of your pages are already getting picked up inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, that tells you where your content’s structured well enough to be pulled into an AI-generated answer. If certain service or location pages aren’t showing impressions there at all, that’s a decent flag for where your schema, FAQ content or overall structure might need tightening up.

What it won’t tell you is whether that visibility is actually worth owt in traffic terms, or how you’re doing anywhere outside Google. For that you still need to be tracking AI referral traffic properly in GA4 and, if it matters to your business, using a dedicated AI visibility tool for the platforms Search Console will never touch.

We’ve had FAQ, Organisation and service page schema live across our own site and several client sites for a while now specifically for this kind of thing, so this update’s a welcome bit of confirmation rather than a scramble to catch up. Reyt Good Questions

From June 2026, Search Console shows impression data for your pages inside Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover, broken down by page, country, device and date.

Right now it's impressions only, so you can see you're appearing in AI answers but not whether that's translating into visits.

No. AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside Google Search and run through a different pipeline to the standalone Gemini app, which isn't covered by these reports.

No, this update is Google's own ecosystem only. For visibility on other AI platforms you'll need a separate AI visibility tool alongside it.
